Wolf Administration Highlights How Restore Pennsylvania Could Address Infrastructure Needs in Berks County

Douglassville, PA – Today, Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration George McAuley and French Creek State Park Manager James Wassell visited French Creek State Park to discuss how the Restore Pennsylvania proposal could improve roadway and trail infrastructure in Berks County and beyond.

“Restore Pennsylvania will accelerate projects to improve lower-traffic roadways and assist with preparing for and reacting to flooding,” McAuley said. “It will also support safe, sustainable transportation connections across the state.”

Restore Pennsylvania is a statewide plan to aggressively address the commonwealth's vital infrastructure needs. Funded through a commonsense severance tax, Restore Pennsylvania is the only plan that will help make Pennsylvania a leader in the 21st century.

PennDOT data shows there was $125.7 million in flood and significant slide damage to state-maintained roads and bridges in 2018 alone. The department typically budgets approximately $30 million for emergency funding in a given fiscal year. Restore Pennsylvania would not only provide an avenue for communities and people impacted by these emergencies to rebuild their lives, but it will also help PennDOT and communities across the state make improvements to mitigate as much risk as possible.

At the event, the officials discussed a desired project to safely connect the park’s Shed Road parking area to the Hopewell Big Woods Trail. Trail users must cross Route 345 and no funding is identified for potential improvements to enhance safety for motorists or trail users in the area.

“As the Hopewell Big Woods Trail will be traversing French Creek State Park and crossing several roads, this is yet another example of PennDOT and the Bureau of State Parks working together in a collaborative project for the shared good of park visitors and motorists,” Wassell said.
